Raja Ravi Varma was a prolific painter who produced over 2000 paintings in his lifetime. He painted various subjects, such as portraits, landscapes, scenes from Indian history and mythology, and social issues. He was especially renowned for his realistic and graceful portrayal of women, who were often depicted as the central figures of his compositions.
Some of his most famous paintings include Shakuntala (1870), Nair Lady Adorning Her Hair (1894), The Lady with the Lamp (1893), Damayanti Talking to a Swan (1899), and Hamsa Damayanti (1900). These paintings showcase his mastery of oil painting, his use of vibrant colors, his attention to detail, and his ability to capture the emotions and expressions of his characters.
Raja Ravi Varma was also a pioneer of chromolithography in India. He established a printing press in Bombay in 1894, where he reproduced his paintings as oleographs or lithographs. These prints were widely circulated and affordable, and they popularized his style and imagery among the masses. They also influenced the visual culture of India, especially the depiction of Hindu gods and goddesses in calendars, posters, and cinema. ec8f644aee
